Commissioner for the Protection of Equality Brankica Janković met this morning with representatives of the student plenum of the Faculty of Dramatic Arts (FDA), at their request, regarding the demands they made on November 26th related to the unequal treatment and failure to prosecute individuals who physically attacked students at a rally held on November 22nd.
Equality before the law and equal treatment of all by the competent state authorities, in this case the police and the prosecutor’s office, are the foundations on which the state and society should rest. Without this, there is no rule of law and no real, legal state nor its institutions truly exist and operate in practice, the Commissioner emphasized.
Not hearing the students’ demands means turning a deaf ear to the principles of the rule of law. Their demands should be taken seriously, and timely responses should be provided, which include identifying all perpetrators who participated in the attack and prosecuting them in accordance with the law, concluded the Commissioner, who said that immediately after the meeting she would contact the competent authorities and point out the need for urgent action in accordance with the competences and laws.
