As part of the project “Advancing Workplace Equality – A Joint Initiative for Workplace Equality,” supported by GIZ Serbia, the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality has published a revised and updated edition of the Equality Code: Guidelines for Developing Anti-Discrimination Policies for Employers in Serbia.
The Commissioner, as a national institution committed to combating discrimination and promoting equality, has placed significant focus on fostering an inclusive labor market. In 2017, the first edition of the Equality Code was developed, achieving notable success and garnering interest from many employers. With the legal framework having undergone certain improvements and recognizing that workplace discrimination remains one of the most frequently reported issues, this area continues to be a priority. The revised publication aims to further strengthen collaboration with employers in developing preventive measures to safeguard human rights and eliminate workplace discrimination.
To evaluate challenges in the implementation of inclusive workplace policies, identify problematic areas for employers, and highlight examples of successful practices, a comprehensive study was conducted. Using quantitative data collection methods and focus groups, the research included companies of various sizes and sectors, with different levels of prior engagement in anti-discrimination efforts and workplace equality initiatives.
The findings of this study have significantly contributed to the enhancement of the Equality Code, addressing new challenges and changes in the workplace. These include updates to the legal framework, shifts in the labor market characterized by workforce shortages across various profiles and professions, the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, and other socio-economic factors.
The revised guidelines are now tailored to meet the current needs of the business sector and workforce, facilitating the adoption or improvement of internal Equality Codes within companies.
