MEETING OF THE COMMISSIONER AND THE PRESIDENT OF THE SERBIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES AND ARTS

The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, met with the president of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, academician Zoran Knežević, with whom, among other things, she discussed the necessity of greater representation of women in the membership of the academy and recommendations for measures to improve equality. The president of SASA expressed a full understanding of this issue, stating that in the discussions conducted within the academy, the need to achieve a fairer balance in the membership in terms of gender through the election of a greater number of women was emphasized. He said that with the amendments to the Statute of SASA adopted in October 2023, a new article was introduced, which states that during the election of new corresponding members of SASA, SASA departments are obliged to take gender equality into account.

In the conversation, the Commissioner thanked Mr. Knežević and emphasized the importance of respecting and improving human rights. She stated that achieving equality is neither easy nor straightforward and requires the involvement of all actors in society. She said that the implementation of activities, the speed of response, and the measures taken so far to achieve gender equality are encouraging and show that the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, as a vital institution, is a sincere partner in building a society in which equality and tolerance are respected.
