The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality submitted to the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia the twelfth Regular Annual Report in the field of protection of equality for 2021, in accordance with the law. The largest number of citizens’ complaints referred to discrimination based on health status, gender and age, and when it comes to areas, most complaints were filed due to discrimination in employment or work, as well as against public authorities.
The year 2021 was also marked by the present health crisis, and the greatest attention was paid to the immunization of the population, which was well organized, with equal availability of vaccines to all citizens. Citizens addressed the Commissioner both in relation to immunization and in connection with COVID certificates. The Commissioner monitored the situation regarding the proportionality of the introduced protection measures, while acting and answering the citizens’ questions in individual cases.
During the year, the Commissioner was addressed by 3,200 citizens who expected help and support in exercising various rights and services. The proceedings were conducted in 1372 cases. Recommendations were acted upon in 88% of cases, which shows that the trend of complying with the recommendations continues.
During 2021, the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality presented to the National Assembly two special reports, the Special Report on Discrimination against the Elderly and the Special Report on Discrimination against Children, which, together with the Special Report on Discrimination in Labor and Employment from 2019, offer a mostly complete overview of the situation of all age groups of the population regarding various grounds of discrimination.
