STATEMENT ON THE OCCASION OF HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

Commissioner for Protection of Equality Brankica Jankovic emphasizes that 10 December, Human Rights Day, is an opportunity to highlight that great number of individuals, as well as whole groups of people, live in poverty, not achieving their rights, marginalized, excluded or in risk of discrimination.

Jankovic visited 92 year old Ruza Kacarevic, who lives alone in village Klinovac, in difficult conditions, without regular incomes and electricity. They talked about everyday problems in her life, which are common for most of older people living in single households in rural areas. Along with Commissioner, Director of the center for social work Bujanovac, Nijaz Ameti was also in this visit and after the discussion on difficulties that workers employed in the center are facing, he expressed full readiness to provide help and support to Ruza Kacarevic in order to overcome hard life situation.

After the visit, Jankovic also had a meeting with Bujanovac Municipality President Saip Kamberi with whom she discussed the improvement of position of all our citizens, particularly poor ones, who are living in rural areas and are the most vulnerable population in all parts of Serbia.

Finally, Commissioner said that socio-economic rights are human rights which are violated at most and that discrimination is most often reported in the area of work and employment, Commissioner announced that she would submit a special report on discrimination in the area of work to the National Parliament of Serbia.
