Commissioner for Protection of Equality Brankica Jankovic strongly condemns the attack on the father of a girl with developmental difficulties who underwent surgery. According to media reports, the girl’s father and an older man were beaten by a car driver in the center of Belgrade, after they asked him to move his vehicle from the parking spot reserved for persons with disabilities, in front of their house.
Parking spaces for persons with disabilities are not aimed to be a concession that is limiting other citizens, they are indicator of respect for the rights and equality of all people in our society, emphasizes Commissioner and warns that violence must not become an substitute for communication.
Jankovic stresses that citizens with disabilities are among the most discriminated groups and who are facing many difficulties on daily basis, from architectural barriers to prejudices in their environment.
Commissioner expects that authorities will do everything to find the perpetrators of this attack.
