Commissioner for the Protection of Equality Brankica Jankovic gave a lecture to students of social-humanistic sciences titled “Women in politics – gender equal or not?”.
Commissioner Jankovic stated that, in spite of good legal framework and mechanisms for the protection of equality, women are still facing bold and hidden types of discrimination, humiliation, exclusion and even violence, just because they are women.
“We are witnessing important progression in the area of gender equality in political and public life in Serbia because women are holding some of the most important positions. Still, they are facing obstacles in this area, such are an insufficient representation, mostly at the local level, small visibility of women from minority groups and also still existing stereotype gender patterns and unsatisfactory empowerment of female politicians and women at the decision making places”, said Commissioner.
Students were especially interested in cases from the practice of the institution of Commissioner, while they also discussed the importance of media in promoting of gender equality.
The seminar was organized by the Center for Education and Social Emancipation of Youth – CEDEM, with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Development and the Faculty of Political Sciences.
