Seminar on discrimination for representatives of National Councils of National Minorities

Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, and the Head of the OSCE Mission in Serbia, Jan Braathu, opened a two-day seminar on recognition of discrimination and protection against it, for representatives of the National Councils of National Minorities in Vrdnik.

National councils are important partners of our Institution, especially when it comes to improving the position of members of national minorities and protecting them from discrimination based on national affiliation and ethnic origin, the Commissioner stated, and pointed out that discrimination based on national affiliation was one of the most common reasons for filing complaints to the Commissioner in 2022.

The seminar presented the legal framework for protection against discrimination, the role of the institution of the Commissioner for Protection of Equality, and the possibilities that National Councils have in this regard. As part of the seminar, it is planned to hold several workshops where the representatives of the National Councils will learn about typical cases of discrimination and the mechanisms for responding to this harmful social phenomenon.
